Periscope, a mobile app owned and developed by Twitter, Inc. launched on Thursday 03/26. For many, it was interpreted as its Meerkat rival which went live at this year’s SXSW event. The conference of all things tech, marketing, and tech where startups aim to be discovered. According to online sources, by Friday evening Periscope had entered the top 30 most downloaded apps at the iOS App Store. Something Meerkat unfortunately was unable to near. Did Meerkat step right over SnapChat? A company that is now valued at approximately $15 billion with no actual business model in place. Meerkat is sweeping the nation and world with its amazing live video streaming capabilities. An app that officially went live on February 27, 2015 and immediately took the marketplace by storm. Entities such as American Idol, Red Bull, Secretary of Commerce, Tony Hawk, and others caught on almost instantly. Each year, Super Bowl XLIX digital media advertising endeavors turn into a stampede of awareness, engagement, and a race for optimal consumer reach. According to SI.com, some 112.19 million viewers ended up watching last year’s Super Bowl. That’s nearly half the U.S. population watching football. Hence the astronomical price tag for Super Bowl ad slots due to the potential wide reach of such large audience. Is Snapchat the Next Big Social Phenomenon?

Behavioral and demographic targeting within the marketing world seems to be on the uprise. Marketers are forced to put forth stronger initiatives on advertising for the younger crowd that is precisely the audience in growing demand. Snapchat, a photo messaging application developed by Stanford University students seems to be gaining significant amount of traction in usability. The app allows its users to take small snaps then able to share directly with selected individuals within their network. Users can set a take limit for viewing of snaps by other users that usually ranging between 1-10 seconds. After that point in time the snaps will be deleted from the users device and essentially from the Snapchat servers. (more…)
